A Heartfelt Celebration To Remember
Over 150 people filled City College's Student Success Center on the evening of April 30 to celebrate the retirement of 41-year Department of Journalism Chair Juan Gonzales and the 90th anniversary of The Guardsman.
Speakers included current and former students and journalism faculty, Vice Chancellor David Yee, Board of Trustees President Aliya Chisti, Trustees Susan Solomon and Anita Martinez, and Student Trustee Angelica, Department Chairperson Council President Darlene Alioto and others.
Former students from around the world booked flights to attend. Many now work in newsrooms for The Atlantic, The San Francisco Chronicle, The San Francisco Standard, and others.
We will miss you, Juan! But we know you’ll be on available to us.

First-Ever Summer Journalism Workshop Now Available
The Department of Journalism is proud to present its first summer workshop course offered at the City Extension.
Taught by department faculty Molly Oleson, "How the News is Made: an Introduction to Journalism” will run from June 23 – July 21 at Mission Center. The cost is $255.
The workshop introduces students to five different aspects of journalism: Generating story ideas, reporting and pitching; news writing; feature writing; copy editing; and multimedia storytelling.

Juan’s Retirement Pachanga & Fundraiser
Acción Latina, publisher of El Tecolote, which Department of Journalism Chair Juan Gonzales founded in 1970, will be hosting a party for Juan to celebrate his retirement.

Journalism Student Marrion Cruz Selected For Summer Internship
The Guardsman New Editor Marrion Cruz is one of five interns who will participate in a summer-long training through Bay News Rising. Congrats, Marrion!
